ASA Opens Invitations for Code Review

The Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa is calling for submissions from the marketing fraternity on proposed changes to the Code of Advertising Practice. This is an annual process that was not conducted in 2017.


“The Code is dynamic in nature,” explains the CEO of the ASA, Gail Schimmel. “This is one of the advantages of self-regulation.”


Whether proposing a new clause, deleting an old clause, amending an old clause, or adding a comma to make a clause read better, the ASA is inviting submissions of the 2018 Code Review. These will then be assessed for legality, submitted to a Code Review Committee and, if accepted, approved at the ASA’s AGM in June.


“The Code belongs to the industry,” says Schimmel. “This process ensures that the rules that the ASA applies are the rules that are agreed to by the industry as a whole.”
